Somebody always forks out first.

ForkOut keeps track of who paid what on trips, in flatshares and at dinners, then works out a short plan to get everyone even.

The Operations tab of Lisbon trip, offline, with one change to sync: a €50.00 settlement from Bob to Alice, waiting to sync. Below it, expenses for a surf lesson, groceries, tram tickets, a dinner and an Airbnb, each with its category, date, payer and amount.
The Balances tab of a group called Lisbon trip. Alice, marked You, is owed €375.00; Bob owes €35.00, Emma €50.00, David €135.00 and Chloé €155.00. Below, the plan to settle up begins: Chloé pays Alice €155.00, David €135.00 and Emma €50.00.

How it works

From the first bill to everyone even

  1. Step 1: Start a group

Name it and add everyone by name. No account, no sign-up: you can start before the first bill arrives.

Creating a group called Lisbon trip, with Alice (marked You), Bob, Chloé, David and Emma as members, and EUR as the reference currency.
  2. Step 2: Add what you paid

Right after paying, add the expense in a few seconds. Split it equally, by shares or in exact amounts, with one payer or several.

Adding an expense: Fish lunch in Cascais, 48.00 EUR, paid by you (Alice) today, in the Restaurants & bars category, split equally.
  3. Step 3: Settle up

ForkOut keeps everyone’s balance and works out a short plan: who pays how much to whom. Record each payment until everyone is even.

Balances of a group called Ski weekend: all five members are at €0.00, and the app says there is nothing to settle: everyone is even.

Features

Fair splits, however the bill falls

  • Split it your way

Equally, by shares or in exact amounts. If two people paid, enter what each one put in.

  • 30 currencies

Paid in dollars on a trip in euros? ForkOut suggests the rate on the day of the expense, and you can correct it.

  • Works offline

On a mountain or in the metro, keep adding expenses. Everything syncs as soon as the network is back.

  • One link to invite

Drop the invitation link in the group chat. Each friend picks who they are and finds what’s already been recorded for them.

  • A log nobody can rewrite

Every change is recorded with who made it and when. Nobody can edit the log, not even the person who wrote it.

  • Closing takes everyone

A group closes only if every member using the app approves, then waits out a grace period. Export a CSV whenever you like.

Questions

Before you install

Something else? Write to contact@forkout.io.

Is ForkOut really free?

Yes. Every feature is free for everyone, and there’s no subscription. ForkOut is paid for by ads: a banner or a card marked “Sponsored” in your lists, and from time to time a full-screen ad. In the EU and the UK, you choose in the app whether ads may use your data.

Do my friends need to install it?

No. Members are names in the group, so one person can record everything. Friends who install ForkOut join with the invitation link, pick who they are, and find what’s already been recorded for them.

Is there an iPhone version?

Not yet. ForkOut is on Android first. A version that runs in any web browser, on iPhone too, is on its way. Until then, friends with an iPhone can still be in your group: you record their expenses for them.

Do I need an account?

No. Open the app and start. If you want to find your history on another phone, secure your account later with an email address.

Does ForkOut move money?

No. ForkOut records who paid what and shows who owes whom. You pay each other however you like, then record the payment so everyone’s balance stays right.

Where is my data, and can I delete it?

Your groups and your account are stored in the European Union. You can delete your account at any time in the app’s settings; the privacy policy explains what disappears and what stays for the other members of your groups.

How does a group end?

Any member using the app can ask to close it. The others using the app then have 14 days to approve: one refusal, or one silence, and the group stays as it is. Once everyone has approved, the group is read-only for 30 days, then deleted for everyone. Until then, anyone can call the closure off, and you can export it as a CSV.

Next time somebody forks out, write it down.
